Tufiño reflects a past generation
Tufiño reflects a past generation in the styles and media he worked in as well as the subjects he chose to depict. The Division of Community Education also functioned to support the production of specific types of work. Puerto Rico was radically different 50 years ago from what it is today.
And so Tufiño was definitely a man of his times and therefore viewing his work in Puerto Rico and now in New York at El Museo del Barrio is clearly to celebrate a Puerto Rico that once was.
Tufiño flows too!
Tufiño recently received a lifetime achievement award from the National Arts Club of New York. He “flows” just as much as Big Pun did. I would say even more so.
It’s great to see his work at El Museo. This has got to be their best show ever–and it is of a single artist. A Puerto Rican — at that!
Who cares?
I like his work a great deal. The nostalgia is really meaningless to me. Personally, I think it was his weakness.
RE: Who cares?
Why was it his weakness?
Tufino
I believe that Tufino contribute with his art to what Puerto Rico is all about. WE should celebrate the accomplishment of a Puerto Rican that demonstrated that our country is rich in talent.
Why shall we judge his work with the optic of the 21st century when in fact he was saving that Puerto Rico for the rest of us, regardless were you are in the US or the island. Let’s give credit to those that eran in the most honorable and honest manner. Let’s work together so nobody can say that Puerto Rico have not contribute to the arts.
RE: RE: Who cares?
Someone actually responded by asking a question! Because he devoted his art to recording the life in Puerto Rico instead of the more formalistic principles of the artform. That took time away from thinking more about the art. He spent a great deal of time thinking about the people.
