pataki has the lead in most cases
pataki has the lead in most cases, since his agenda is quite clear. He will make agreements with latinos and make concessions for votes. thus, the deal cut between dennis rivera and pataki.
although mccall has the liberal record and liberal support, as well as the democratic machine behind him, these in themselves do not carry much weight among latinos. what are the issues?
good schools, safe streets, jobs, Vieques, profiling. pataki can deal, we know his record. mccall is a big question mark. i’m leaning towards pataki since he really stuck his neck out in supporting the navy’s departure from Vieques.
RATaki
Pataki is a traitor to our people. He CUT funding for education, culture, health (except the union members), social services, etc.
Just because he is ahead in the polls does not mean he is any good.
I am NOT voting for RATaki.
Pataki, McCall, Golisano
Both the Republican party and the Democratic leadership have neglected the Latino community. This is especially true of the Democratic leadership like Denny Farrell, Charles Rangel and Carl McCall. Our support over the years has gotten us nothing but gentrification in Spanish Harlem while Central Harlem has a “renaissance”. To their credit the Republicans have recently begun to woo the Latino community, but many of their policies are not Latino friendly, e.g. they are opposed to rent stabilization, a higher minimum wage and social programs that help our most vulnerable communities; children, seniors and the poor in general who are mostly minorities. Golisano may be a viable option, particularly after he spends the $75 million he has in his war chest as compared to Pataki’s $23 million and McCall’s $2.75 million.
Golisano, a wild card. Pataki offers possibility
Independents are basically a wild card and usually, because they are basically self-financed, represent a wild card. Without a clearly articulated platform, I hate to say this, a vote for an independent is wasted except as an expression of protest.
By the way, this is not the case with the Green Party which has a local and nationwide trajectory or ethos. Haven’t heard much by way of a gubernatorial candidate from them. Although they do have candidates running in municipal elections.
JUST A CAUTION
Just a few cautions.
First, the major outcry in “Harlem” is the aggressive encroachment of gentrification. This is a sore a point for the communty at large, as is the low level of support that reached small business owners from Empowerment Zone funds.
Secondly, if you can take a walk around “Central Harlem” you will see more and more Latino faces (the ones you can ID, not to mention all of the rest that are not “tipicos”)
Now the parallel.
One of the major complaints of long time “Spanish Harlem” residents is the aggressive gentrification of the area.
Also, there have been several important meetings held in behalf of small businesses and community-based organiizations in “Spanish Harlem” to address the low level of support from Empowerment Zone funds.
“Renaissance”
The principal renaissance of HARLEM stretches the distance of 125th Street. Have a look at the plans or scan the strip visually. You will see major economic development projects all along the way, with more on the way.
Restaurants in Harlem are popping up all over the place — in so-called “Central Harlem” and “Spanish Harlem”
Anyone who comes into office on whatever level has to address the needs of Harlem at Large.
The communites are intergrated and getting more so by the hour.
Take a look at the new board of directors of the Empowerment Zone and count the Latino names, then come back at me about a different Mission for “Central” and “Spanish” Harlem.
It is in my interest to see all of Harlem uplifted. People who live in “Spanish” Harlem may work in “Central” Harlem, and vice versa.
You eat where you work, and the chances are that you may even choose to live near where you work.
These old line “apartheid” notions are not doing any of us any good; not to mention the fact that they simply to reflect the real and emerging picture.
Rephrase two-party biased question
There is a Green Party candidate besides Golisano running on the Independent ticket. This question is obviously biased and exclusionary. Please correct.
