  1. Unquestionably he was passionate and steadfast in opposition to the vassalage of Puerto Rico.
But over decades, that passion and commitment for independence failed miserably to impact those for whom it claimed to speak – the Puerto Rican populace.
Puerto Rico is now one of the oldest colonies in world history. We are speaking of centuries of a peoples/nation under the suzerainty of a distant, foreign and more powerful nation, and centuries of conditioning to believe or accept such status as a benefit.
For all the energy Mari Bras devoted to the advocacy of Puerto Rico as an independent nation, it was but half of his capability. Because, he devoted at least as much energy to propagating the rewards of a Fidelista society attendant to independence.
And for decades, that was – and is – a no-sale.

I’m a Nuyorican. I’ve lived stateside my whole life.
I have found it mirthful whenever a vote on the PR’s status is discussed, and the argument presented that PR’s who live in the states should also have a vote in the island’s status. On that, I believe that despite my own personal belief that PR should be independent, I think only those who reside on the island should determine its status and future course.

With that, I am left with looking at how to best shift prevailing sentiments and conditioning that have harnessed the PR populace to accepting the status quo.
And there, Mari Bras did little to affect change.
