The evening will also include a work-in-progress screening of the documentary you do not want to miss.
At 102 years old, Isabel Rosado has become a revered symbol of colonial resistance in Puerto Rico and her life is a testament to the island’s unresolved struggle with political status, economic development, and century long struggle for independence. With nearly four hundred years under Spanish domination and over 100 years of U.S. colonial rule, Puerto Rico stands as one of the oldest colonies in the world. Isabel Rosado: Nationalist (working-title) is an hour long documentary that chronicles the life of a humble woman who was ready to risk it all — dedicating her life to the Puerto Rican independence movement and as a result spent many years in prison. As a member of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, a political party seeking independence, Isabel collected funds, sewed flags, staffed party offices, delivered messages, cared for the stricken leader Don Pedro Albizu Campos, and even took up arms in his defense. Along with other Nationalist women, she challenged the status quo on not only what it means to be a woman in today’s society but also what it means to be a revolutionary. Her story highlights the central problem of colonialism and the universal portrait of an elder woman who continues to thrive in human emotion and spirit despite her age.

On Friday, September 24th, 2010, a fundraiser will be held at and hosted by the Julia De Burgos Cultural Center, where the public will be able to enjoy themselves with live music, food, drink and a DJ spinning a variety of musical styles, in order to benefit El Barrio Boxing Association. A non-profit organization originally based in Binghamton, NY, and is now in the process of relocating to the cultural melting pot that is “Spanish Harlem” in New York City.
On hand will be live music from, not one, but TWO Salsa bands. One led by the beautiful CITA RODRIGUEZ, who is the daughter of the legendary vocalist Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez. The other being Salsa fan favorites who began in the 60s & 70s and have re-emerged in the new millennium and are being embraced by a whole new generation of dancers around the globe, Grammy nominees and ‘Fania’ recording artists, THE NEW SWING SEXTET.
There will be food and drink available with catering provided by LA FONDA BORICUA restaurant. DJ music provided by the swinging DJ CASPER.
The event will be held Friday, September 24th, 2010 @ the Julia De Burgos Cultural Center located at 1680 Lexington Ave. (E. 106th St.), New York, NY, 10029. Doors open from 5pm to Midnight.
We ask that everyone who attends to please contribute a minimum $20 donation at the door. So, come out and enjoy a great night of excellent music, fun-filled dancing and great food, while contributing to a good cause.
The mission of El Barrio Boxing Association is to provide a safe and supportive environment for local “at risk” youth as an alternative to drug abuse and violence through athletics, mentoring, educational programs, and community service.

With his infamous cult films Holy Mountain, El Topo and Fando y Lis (which caused a riot upon its premier) Chilean-born Alejandro Jodorowsky altered the visual language and philosophy of cinema. Breaking from conventional approaches to filmmaking, Jodorowsky worked with hermetic alchemy, symbolism and complex rituals to create a profound and transformative experience designed to heal one’s psychic wounds.
Beginning on the autumn equinox, September 23, the Museum of Arts and Design is proud to present Blood into Gold: The Cinematic Alchemy of Alejandro Jodorowsky, showcasing the complete body of film work as a core component to a series exploring the broad influence of this groundbreaking auteur.
As part of this retrospective, Alejandro Jodorowsky will be present for two post- screening discussions, and he will hold a Saturday afternoon master class called “Art as a Way of Transformation.” This seminar-style program will provide insight into Jodorowsky’s thinking on the power of film and art, with attention given to
art-making as a means for enlightenment.
