PR television shows feature transvestites
Someone explain to me why some of the most popular shows in Puerto Rico feature men dressed as women. Take for example Minga y Petraca. Yet if a man steps out into the street as a transvestite he incurs the machismo wrath and insults typical of our homophobic society. Some of the moronic statements I’ve heard about lesbians are “Mejor puta que pata”. As if being a diseased ridden whore is better than being a clean-living lesbian since at least the whore is “straight”. What many people don’t know is that many whores sell their bodies for money and look to women for love. Working in a correction facility in New York many years ago, was a real eye-opener for me on this situation. Part of our training before starting to work required that we learn about the psychological aspects of drug addicts. Many an inmate told me that they worked men for money to obtain drugs for themselves and their female lovers.
so what? what’s your point
well is this about Puerto Rican television or homosexuality–specifically lesbianism? i can’t really speak on either since i’m not familiar with PR tv’s representations of homosexuality and have very little first hand knowledge of gay life–although i don’t doubt that there may be many closeted types that i interact with regularly you basically are observing a very contradicatory and ironic condition between PR tv and PR attitudes towards gays in real life. perhaps those shows are popular for other reasons than the one you indicate. perhaps the shows are popular inspite of the fact that there is a gay character. tv is screwy in the states and i can’t imagine it being very different on the island–especially since many American shows are dubbed into Spanish. if you want to discuss homosexuality or homophobia Puerto Rican style then just say so.
i’m puerto rican and i’ve seen that show a million times and i love it.
the show is basically two men making fun of women, not being gay.
they read gossip magazines that women do and talk about the gossip.
that is all..
